Call Of Duty: Warzone is a battle royale game that was developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision on March 10, 2020 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Narrative-wise, the game is loosely connected to Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare, of which it also shares assets with.
Activision might also be working on a mobile version of Call Of Duty: Warzone, according to an official job listing. The job description, which has since been taken down, included a direct mention of a Warzone Mobile title, as well as a reference to “a new AAA mobile FPS in the Call Of Duty franchise”.
Warzone is the second battle royale instalment in the long-running Call Of Duty series, following the “Blackout” mode in 2018’s Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4.
Call Of Duty: Warzone takes place in a city called Verdansk, which includes several different named sectors and zones, as well as hundreds of unique landmarks. Each match can also support up to 150 players, which exceeds the size of similar titles such as Fortnite (100 players), PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (100 players) and Apex Legends (60 players).
Moreover, death in Warzone does not equate to an automatic loss like other battle royales. Instead, players are sent to a “Gulag” where they battle one-on-one with other fallen players for a second chance to be respawned.
Besides the standard battle royale gameplay, Warzone also features a mode called Plunder where players compete to gather the most cash by the end of the match. Abilities such as Cash Deposit Helipads and bonus rounds are activated when teams reach a certain amount in total cash.
The two modes also feature small missions called Contracts that squads can complete during a match in order to gain rewards such as loot items, special abilities and cash. The assignments range from hunting down an enemy player, scavenging for special supply boxes and recon tasks akin to King of the Hill modes.
In early September, Infinity Ward released a playlist update for Call of Duty: Warzone that removed all vehicles from the game. The developer noted that the removal of vehicles is only temporary, but did not announce when they would return.
At the end of July, Infinity Ward introduced a small playlist update that allowed players to once again dive into Plunder Blood Money Trios, alongside the usual playlists: Solos, Duos, Trios and Quads. The Plunder Quads, however, was removed.
On July 14, Infinity Ward removed Battle Royale Stimulus Trios from the playlist, and replaced it with Plunder Trios. In the same update, the company also fixed a gun exploit where players could pick up weapons before the infill sequence.
The latest playlist update on May 30 finally added the much-requested duos mode to Call Of Duty: Warzone. It joined other regular modes such as solo, trios, quads and plunder quads.
Infinity Ward updated the playlist on May 19, and brought back Blood Money Quads for Plunder. It also added a new limited-time mode, Classic Battle Royale, whichgets rid of Buy Stations, Contracts and the Gulag.
On October 29, Activision revealed that the upcoming Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will begin integration with Warzone in December. While a date for the integration has not been announced, it has been confirmed that the integration will coincide with the start of Black Ops Cold War Season One.
“Black Ops Cold War’s in-game content will be centred around the same in-game system that resonated so well with players in Modern Warfare. And starting with the first season of in-game content in December, Black Ops Cold War will be integrated into Warzone,” said Activision Blizzard president and COO Daniel Alegre.
“We’ll bring Black Ops Cold War‘s characters and weaponry into the free-to-play experience along with substantial new content, ensuring that Warzone remains both a terrific experience and a powerful on-ramp for the franchise’s premium content,” he added.
As part of the ongoing season 6 of Call Of Duty: Warzone, Infinity Ward released The Haunting Of Verdansk, a new Halloween-themed update, on October 20.
The new update runs from October 20 to November 3. The event will introduce a slew of new content, including skins based on iconic horror movie characters, from the Saw and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre film franchises.
Developer Infinity Ward has released a new patch for Call Of Duty: Warzone on October 8, which heavily nerfs the SP-R 208 rifle. The gun now has increased flinch as well as a slower aim down sight (ADS) speed. Its variable zoom scope attachment now also moves the weapon closer to the player while aiming, with a small reduction to aiming speed.
Tweaks have been made to the AS Val rifle and its SSP 10-R mags; the guns will now no longer penetrate multiple walls without any damage penalty. The SKS semi-automatic rifle has also received a small reduction to its aim down sight speed for a variety of its zoom scopes.
Season 6 of Call Of Duty: Warzone was released on September 29. The new update added the ability for players to fast travel thanks to the introduction of a seven-stop subway system.
Known as the “Metro”, the subway system will have fully operational trains that allow players to fast travel between points on the map. Stations will also be packed with loot to find and obtained. However, trains won’t operate unless there is no conflict onboard and will not venture into areas outside the circle.
Season 5 Reloaded of Call Of Duty: Warzone launched on August 25. It included the addition of a new mode titled King Slayer, which operates as a large-scale team deathmatch between multiple teams.
The update also featured the Games Of Summer event, which will ran from August 28 to September 7. Players were challenged to tackle five single-player trials of skill, where they can rack up points and medals in exchange for prizes such as vehicle skins, XP tokens, vehicle horns, calling cards and legendary weapon blueprints.
Season 5 of Call Of Duty: Warzone launched on August 5. The massive update expanded the map, with the opening of the stadium and the train station. Moving freight trains are also being introduced, which players can use to “escape the gas, take a load off or get to a new location stealthier, without the noise of a vehicle engine.”
The Season 5 Battle Pass also comes with new weapons and an operator. The weapons being introduced are the ISO SMG (Tier 15) and the AN-94 assault rifle (Tier 31), both of which can be unlocked for free by playing the game.
Season 4 Reloaded of Call Of Duty: Warzone was released on June 29. The new update introduced the 200-player battle royale mode, alongside fresh gear, the Team Defender mode and new maps.
Season 4 of Call Of Duty: Warzone was released by Infinity Ward on June 11. The update introduced a number of new mid-game events: ‘Jailbreak’, ‘Fire Sale’ and ‘Supply Chopper’.
‘Jailbreak’ will revive all players – even those who have perished in the Gulag – back to the fight, encouraging players to stick around even after death. ‘Fire Sale’ will give players large discounts of at buy stations for one single minute. The last feature is ‘Supply Chopper’, where helicopters will enter the map for players to shoot down and gain loot.
The new season also added a new 50vs50 mode called Warzone Rumble, as well as a Juggernaut Royale mode that will feature care packages containing a powerful juggernaut suit that will give wearers more health and other upgrades.
Season 3 Reloaded of Call Of Duty: Warzone launched on April 30. The large 13GB mid-season update added a new contract type called Most Wanted, which places a target on a player in exchange for bonuses should they survive. However, the contract type was removed just a day later on May 1 after player feedback.
The update also included new weapons, and fresh modes such as Gunfight Knives Only, Demolition and Gun Game Reloaded. The playlist was also refreshed and included Quads, Trios, Solos and Plunder Trios.
The original Season 3 of Warzone arrived on April 8. One of the biggest changes was the addition of Quads mode. However, it had initially replaced Trios, which Warzone launched with, but Trios was eventually brought back in mid-April. Other additions were a slew of new vehicle skins as well as other cosmetic enhancements.
The Season 3 Battle Pass also dropped on the same date. It included blueprints for weapons such as handgun Cerastes, legendary assault rifle Beefeater and legendary spinner Witching Hour.
Every season of Call Of Duty: Warzone runs for roughly eight weeks. As Season 3 launched on April 8, Season 4 is expected to arrive sometime in early June. Moreover, the current Battle Pass is also scheduled to expire on June 2.
Call Of Duty: Warzone is a standalone free-to-play title that does not require players to own Modern Warfare. However, players who already own Modern Warfare will be able to access Warzone through that game’s menu with no extra download required.
All progress from Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare, including weapon experience, items unlocked through gameplay and Battle Pass tiers, will be carried over to Warzone. Additionally, Warzone-only players will also have their progress transferred to Modern Warfare, should they ever decide to purchase it.
Much like Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare, cross-platform play is available for Warzone. This means players on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will be competing against one another in the same matches. The game also supports cross-platform save progression.
